First Filling? Here’s What You Need to Know!

patient-having-a-tooth-filling

Over the years our patients have had a much lower risk of tooth decay thanks to the emergence of more advanced preventative dentistry. Despite all your care however, a cavity may still occur when you least expect it. If you’ve found out you have tooth decay for the first time and you’re wondering what it’s like to get your very first dental filling, here’s what you need to know:

Filling Material

The type of material used for your filling largely depends on the location and size of your cavity. Usually, dental fillings are made using tooth-colored composite material. For larger cavities, our dentist may recommend a stronger filling material, made out of ceramic. Both ceramic and composite fillings can be designed according to the shade of your natural smile.

Numbing

Before we start the procedure, a small amount of anesthetic will be injected to numb the nerves around your tooth and make it nearly painless to endure. To minimize your discomfort, numbing jelly will be applied before the injection.

Professional cleaning

Our dentist will make use of a small dental bur to clean away any infected tooth structure as well as the enamel immediately adjoining it. This is to prevent further spread of the cavity.

Filling Placement

The composite material is then shaped into your tooth to recreate that natural look and feel. Once it cures into place, you’ll be able to use your tooth with no hitches. Your fillings can set immediately (if ceramic) or can take up to 24 hours to set in full strength (if amalgam).

After-care

If you want your filling to last as long as possible, you need to regularly brush and floss your teeth, while also attending regular checkups. If you have teeth grinding habits, we recommend seeing one of our dentists to curb it. With the right care, your filling can last several years!
