Wisdom Tooth Removal: Aftercare & Tips
Aftercare plays a vital role in your journey to recovery after wisdom tooth removal. Whilst the treatment may be over, the healing process is just beginning and following the right steps is needed for a comfortable and successful recovery.
In this article, we’ll explore various aftercare tips, which will help you understand what to do and what not to do after having your wisdom teeth removed. Let’s dive in!
Watch Your Diet
Stick to soft and nutritious foods for the first few days. Products like yoghurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies and soups are ideal! Avoid hard, hot, spicy, and chewy foods that can irritate the extraction site and affect your recovery. We also recommend that you drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Water is your best friend during your healing phase. Avoid using a straw, however, as the suction can dislodge blood clots and slow healing.
What To Avoid
Certain behaviours should be avoided to keep from disturbing the healing site and allowing infection to settle in. For example, in the first 24-72 hours following your wisdom tooth removal, we highly recommend avoiding smoking, consuming alcohol, rinsing and spitting.
Take It Easy
Rest and relaxation are vital for a speedy recovery. Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting and vigorous exercise for at least a few days after the treatment. Keep your head elevated with an extra pillow while resting or sleeping. This can help reduce swelling and promote better blood circulation.
Maintain Oral Hygiene
Gently brush your teeth while avoiding the extraction site. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and rinse your mouth with warm saltwater to keep it clean and prevent infection. Don’t aggressively spit the water out, however, as this could cause painful complications in your healing.
Manage Discomfort & Swelling
Some swelling and mild discomfort may occur, which is quite normal after wisdom teeth removal. Applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 20 minutes at a time can reduce swelling. Over-the-counter pain relievers recommended by our dentists can also help manage any discomfort.
Follow the Dentist’s Instructions
Our dentist will provide specific instructions after your treatment. Follow them diligently, including taking prescribed medications, using mouth rinses and attending checkups. Regularly visit our dentist for follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress. We will ensure everything is on track and address any concerns or questions you may have.
Keep in mind that each person’s recovery journey is unique. If you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain, prolonged swelling or any other worrisome symptoms, contact one of our experienced dentists so that we can address them right away.
With proper care and a little patience, you’ll be back to your normal routine in no time!
