4 Ways to Make Sure Your Overdentures Last

smiling-patient-wih-overdentures

Your overdentures are designed to be more comfortable and secure than dentures, and an affordable alternative to dental implants. You’ll still want to get the most out of your overdentures, however, and to make sure this investment lasts for years to come, here are four steps we recommend taking regularly:

Use a non-abrasive toothpaste

Just like your natural teeth, bacteria can easily accumulate on overdentures and lead to decay over time if not consistently cleaned. It’s important to clean your prosthetic teeth each day to keep it bacteria-free and to also minimize any stain accumulation. The best way to do this is by using a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive cleaner/toothpaste to avoid any damage.

Use a water-flosser

A toothbrush, while essential to your oral hygiene routine, won’t thoroughly cover the nooks and contours of your teeth, which tend to be at most risk for decay. This is where a flosser comes in handy! By using a water flosser in particular you’ll be able to clean these areas with ease.

Soak in denture solution

If your implant-supported dentures are removable, we recommend soaking them in denture-cleaning solution each night as you head to bed. This prevents your prosthetic teeth from becoming brittle over time and also plays an essential role in disinfecting them of any plaque buildup. Make sure to rinse out the denture solution before placing them back in, however.

Schedule regular checkups

It’s important to schedule a checkup every 6 months in order to make sure your dental restorations aren’t damaged and to get them professionally cleaned. During these checkups your surrounding gum tissues will also be assessed for gum disease.

Simply stick to this oral hygiene routine consistently and you can ensure your investment lasts for years to come. Want to assess if this restoration is the best fit for you? Contact our Port Melbourne Dentist today for an appointment!
